The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has thrown its full support behind the campaign against privatising public assets and services in Papua New Guinea, ITF said in its press release.

Three trade unions – the Energy Workers Union, Maritime and Transport Workers Union and National Airline Employees Association – have formed a coalition to keep some of the country’s biggest companies, including PNG Power, PNG Ports and Air Nuigini, in public hands.

Ka’apor Indians in the Amazon rainforest have formed an indigenous “army” to combat illegal invasions of their land, following the government’s failure to protect their territory.

Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) secretary Dr Eric Kwa says Papua New Guinea will have to adopt a more-positive attitude and shrug off the inferiority complex if the country is to move forward.

Kwa, Papua New Guinea’s foremost legal expert who is spearheading the review into the Organic Law on provincial government and local level governments, said nothing would happen without positivity and faith in public servants as service deliverers.

LANDS and Physical Planning Minister Benny Allan has thrown in his support for the decentralisation of land board functions to provinces.

"This is so that each province can have their own land and physical planning board to plan how they can use their land without waiting for approvals from the National Land Board, in so far as allocation and granting of land titles are concerned," Minister Allan said in a statement yesterday.
